It’s been a busy few months for the SMC team who have been on the road attending and exhibiting at industry conferences around Australia while renovations were underway. You might have caught up with them at the 14th annual Executive Assistant Network expo in Sydney in March and the 32nd annual Meetings and Events Industry (MEA) national conference in Brisbane in April, which were great opportunities to present the newly renovated and upgraded SMC.
Another highlight was the annual boutique trade show Events Uncovered held in early July 2019 by the Intermedia Group, publishers of Spice News and the A List Guide. More than 500 professionals came through the doors to meet with the 25 venues and suppliers that exhibited on the day. Events Uncovered is renowned for its non-traditional style – free of the usual stands and pull up banners – and exhibitors were free to transform their zone with creative designs and interactive experiences. Some of the stand outs included Party Highers liquid moving dancefloor, Musicland’s live art frame and Rentertainment’s Mosaic Wall along with Merlin Entertainments snakes alive and cuddly koalas.
This expo provided a perfect platform for SMC General Manager Paul Davison and Sales Director Scott Cooper to showcase the transformation of SMC to event bookers from the corporate arena, government departments, associations, marketing agencies and to other industry professionals. The team took a creative leap and their decision to wrap a coffee cart in SMC’s new designs proved to be a magnet and talking point for under-caffeinated visitors, especially as it was the only coffee stand on site. Scott partnered with Lavazza and enlisted their top barista and Training Manager Alex Hambert to provide free coffees for attendees. He also teamed Alex with a cocktail mixologist to supercharge proceedings with espresso martini tastings ahead of the post-show cocktail reception. Attendees also received SMC’s sustainable BPA-free Tritan refillable water bottles and a renovation fact sheet inside their goodie bags.
This generosity of spirit(s), had trade show guests lining up to hear all about SMC’s new ‘conference centre within a centre’ on Level 4 that will come online soon, as well as the advanced AV, entertainment systems and integrated technologies that have elevated the event experience throughout the landmark building.
“Events Uncovered was an ideal opportunity to let Sydney event organisers know that we’re back and better than ever now that our multi-million dollar renovations are complete,” says Scott who finds such networking events invaluable for meeting new faces, reconnecting with existing contacts and raising awareness. “The response has been fantastic with a constant roll of site inspections and bookings locked in for the coming months, including corporate dinners, launches and Christmas parties”.
